The Human Cities Toolbox, a production of the Human Cities Network, created and developed to inspire everyone to undertake projects and actions in the public space. The Human Cities Toolbox is proposing a selection of European existing examples, inviting those who wants to reclaim public space to start action! The entire Toolbox can be browsed on the website.
‘When Human makes Cities’, a webdocumentary developed by Victor Lévy, can be watched HERE. Lévy about his webdoc: “As I set out to explore these different projects, I realized how often things come into being through the sheer willpower and pugnacity of ordinary men and women. Located in vastly different cities, these citizens of humanity reflect the social and political fabric of the place which instigated their actions. Spurred on by their ideals, and often minimizing the hardships, challenges and time constraints, these individuals threw themselves wholeheartedly and fearlessly into an adventure that only seems obvious to us today. This documentary tells their story”
Children see beauty in things we no longer notice. Turtlewings developed a documentary film from a workshop during which children were given digital cameras and spycams when walking down 5 streets in downtown Brussels. The goal was just to document everything the children noticed. You can check out the result on Youtube.

This international happening and scientific gathering is supported by the EU Culture Programme 2007-2013 and the European network of partners, La Cambre Horta from the ULB (BE), Pro Materia (BE), Urban Planning Institute of the Republic of Slovenia – UIRS (SLO), Cité du Design from St-Etienne (FR) and Politecnico di Milano (IT) with the kind collaboration of Time Circus (BE) and a series of institutional and private partners.

Pro Materia is proud to present its latest project, supported by the Culture (2007-2013) Programme of the European Union: GLASS IS TOMORROW!
GLASS IS TOMORROW is a European network which aims at establishing a more fluid exchange of knowledge and competencies between glass and design professionals in the north, south, east and west of Europe. Glass aesthetics and techniques will be explored by tandems of designers and glassmakers to develop new typologies of everyday objects. The project hopes to open up new potentialities and to generate dialogue about the conception, production and distribution of glass pieces.
HOW? 3 workshops
WHEN? 12-16 September 2011 (FI), 30 January-3 February 2012 (CZ) and 9-18 July 2012 (FR)
WHERE? Nuutajärvi glass village (FI), Prague (CZ) and Meisenthal (FR)
WHO? Each workshop hosts 5 tandems of designers and glass makers
WHAT? Co-creation of around thirty prototypes of utilitarian glass objects within a theme
RESULT? A reference publication, video documentary and photographic portfolio by James Bort (www.jamesbort.com) in combination with a touring exhibition in Europe

thewhitehotel: Belgian Designers Rooms 2010 - 2012
Since 2006, thewhitehotel has been showcasing over half a decade of evolution in contemporary Belgian design. The hotel, located in the center of the most cosmopolitan district of Belgium’s capital, has offered around sixty contemporary designers the opportunity to customise both its rooms and the lobby.
After four years of existence, the Belgian Designers Rooms have been shuffled and updated with a mix of existing and new objects, chosen by Pro Materia in close partnership with thewhitehotel, in order to provide the hotel clients with more comfort and conviviality. The hotel does not only host Belgian design objects, it also offers its guests the possibility of bringing some of those pieces home via its webshop.
The objects on show, designed both by emerging and well established Belgian designers, all promote the characteristic sense of quality and originality of Belgian design.

thewhitehotel is the first hotel in Belgium to promote Belgian design. This innovative concept of Lise Coirier (asbl Pro Materia) has gained reputation under the label ‘Belgian Designers Rooms’. The original concept was initiated by A2M (Sebastian Moreno-Vacca), Michel Penneman and Jean Michel André.
