Compasso d’Oro: 50 years of Italian Design
The Compasso d’Oro Design awards have been presented in Milan since 1954. Initially these awards were presented every year. Later they were presented every two years, and they have been presented every three years since 1967.
This prestigious award of international renown aims to encourage industrialists and craftsmen to raise the production standard, both from a technological and aesthetic viewpoint.
The exhibition presents a chronological survey of the entries that have been selected or that have won the Compasso d’Oro Award from 1954 until 2004.
Some important award winners were Mario Bellini, Andrea Branzi, Marcel Breuer, Achille Castiglione, Sergio Pininfarina, Kaj Franck, Gio Ponti, Renzo Piano, Richard Sapper, Marco Zanuso, Vico Magistretti, Ettore Sottsass and Bruno Munari.

The Design museum Gent is a cultural institution of the City of Gent. Since January 1999 the museum has been recognized by the Ministry of the Flemish Community in the highest category. Next to the important financing by the city of Gent, other resources are subsidies by Ministry of the Flemish Community and the Province of East-Flanders.
The Design museum Gent is unique in Belgium. The accent in the collections and exhibitions lies on 20th century and actual design.
